Are REITs required to pay dividends?
REITs are required by law and the IRS to distribute 90% or more of their taxable income to shareholders in the form of dividends. As a result, REITs are frequently free from most corporate income taxes. Dividends paid to REIT shareholders are taxed as though they were conventional dividends.
