Designing a Garden in the Woods - FineGardening
Abstract
The owner of a log cabin at the north end of Bainbridge Island, Washington, was looking to strike for a garden in the woods. As a board member for the Bloedel Reserve, the homeowner wanted a garden filled with different and unusual plants. By implementing an organic layout, using natural hardscape materials, and embracing native plant partnerships, that is exactly what he got. The installation didnโt disrupt or compromise the native plants. This installation didn't disrupt or compromised the native Plants. But were essential for privacy. The views are spectacular, from above and below.

Creating a garden in shade can be tough enough, but when youโre attempting to carve a garden out of a densely wooded lot, the challenges are multiplied. Most gardeners want a landscape that stands out beautifully but doesnโt look out of place or at complete odds with the surroundings. The garden pockets in this landscape were carved out from the sounding woods and built to bridge the gap between the cultivated spaces and the wild area. Your native surroundings may not be woodland, but the same basic principles can be implemented. Three main layers make this planting approach possible. See the entire garden here. Christina Tyzzer is sharing a look back at the gardening year with us as we move into fall. We garden in Indiana in Zone 6a. It has been a hot, dry year, and so a bit challenging, but we learn so much through these challenges. Here is a look at our 2022 garden. The vegetable garden is promising a great harvest in a few short months! We did learn that the tomatoes cannot be tied to our 6-foot fence next year, as those red globes are just too enticing to the chickens! They got all of the first fru...

When the time came for me to transform a 90-year-old putting green into a perennial garden on my familyโs three-generation plot, I froze. As a designer, I usually seek out such challenges, but when faced with planning a garden on this spot in my yardโwhich was a large, blank canvasโI felt overwhelmed as I could suddenly do whatever I wanted. This garden is made up of four quadrants around two perpendicular gravel paths that lead to other areas of the yard. Step 1: Garden preplanning Consid...

Iโm Katie. Iโm a proud Midwesterner, and all of these photos are from my Indiana backyard garden. By day, I am a licensed and certified speech-language pathologist. By weekend and summer, I turn full-fledged gardener and spend most of my time in my humble backyard paradise. About six years ago, I began transforming our empty, desolate, almost full-acre yard to rich, healthy ecosystems in the form of garden beds, shrubs, and trees. In addition to this, I โraiseโ monarchs and proudly wear ...

Todayโs photos are from Dede Lifgren. Welcome to my garden in Brewster, New York (Zone 6a). I am an artist and garden lover. Much of my artwork centers around my garden. Or is it the other way around? Either way, I love to take full advantage of both! My pineapple columns and some potted impatiens (Impatiens walleriana, Zones 10โ11 or as an annual) greet visitors at the entryway. In the main garden, trickling water can be heard from the fountain as you enter the property. A cypress (Chamaecy...

As a newcomer to our property, I spend untold hours gazing at our land; nearly all that I see are trees. Yes, thereโs a field leading down to a swimming pond, with a beaver pond beyond. But the old pastureland left behind by the rugged souls who eventually traveled west in search of richer soils and gold is now a mixed forest of oak, maple, pine, and hemlock. Ever the designer, I long to make my own small mark on this special place by planting even more trees in the garden. Yet how do I step i...

Today weโre visiting with Sharon Danovich Lupone in Pittsburgh. Weโve been to her garden before (Sharonโs Pennsylvania Garden, Part 2 and Sharonโs Pennsylvania Garden), and today sheโs sharing some views of the garden is it moves into fall. As summer winds down, the blooms of the panicle hydrangeas (Hydrangea paniculata, Zones 3โ8) take on rosey hues. Comfortable chairs invite you to sit and enjoy the garden. A pot of coleus (Coleus scutellarioides, Zones 9โ11 or as an annual) give...

Weโre with Cherry Ong today, tagging along on a garden tour she did earlier this year during a trip to the Toronto area. According to the brochure Cherry received for the tour, this woodland planting is the garden of a professional gardener who likes to garden in harmony with nature, using nothing but fallen leaves to fertilize and enrich the soil. Here you can see a diversity of beautiful ferns as thriving in those conditions. If you choose the right plants for the right spots, theyโll thri...
