Rebuilt TBM launches into second HS2 tunnel drive
Abstract
The second one-mile tunnel bore under Long Itchington Wood in Warwickshire marks the next big milestone for the Balfour Beatty Vinci tunnelling team on the northern section of phase one. Dorothy became the first on the HS2 project to complete a tunnel drive in July 2022. Since then the gantries of the tunnel boring machine were brought back through the tunnel and reassembled at the north portal. The 10m diameter cutterhead, weighing 160 tonnes, was transported by road.

The firm is supplying giant precast concrete segments being used to build a new HS2 “green tunnel” in Northamptonshire. The Enquirer revealed last month that “quality issues” have been found on the initial batch of segments manufactured by Stanton Precast at its plant in Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Tests are still underway on the segments on the 2.5km Chipping Warden Green Tunnel where work started earlier this year. Main contractor on the job is EKFB – a team made up of Eiffage, Kier, Fer...

HS2 on Friday 10th June announced the start of construction at the site of its first ‘green tunnel’, designed to blend the high-speed railway into the landscape and reduce disruption for communities. Unlike a normal underground tunnel, the one-and-a-half mile (2.5km) Chipping Warden green tunnel in Northamptonshire is being built on the surface using a pioneering off-site manufacturing approach to speed up construction and improve efficiency. This approach will see more than five thousand gi...

The Enquirer understands that urgent tests are being carried-out on segments erected on the 2.5km Chipping Warden Green Tunnel where work started earlier this year. Site sources said the part-erected tunnel may have to be demolished depending on the extent of the issues. The tunnel segments are being made by Stanton Precast in Ilkeston Derbyshire for main contractor EKFB – a team made up of Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial Construction and BAM Nuttall. The 15m-20m long escape tunnels are bored every 500m to connect the two main running tunnels around 40m below the surface. An expert team of miners are using a remotely controlled excavator to break out of and excavate from one running tunnel to the adjacent tunnel. As the excavation is progressed the ground is supported using a sprayed concrete lining (SCL). Delivered by HS2’s main works contractor, Align – a joint venture formed of Bouygues Travaux Publics, Sir Robert McAlpine, and Volk...

Dorothy completed the first tunnel drive on the Long Itchington Wood Tunnel in July, breaking through at the south portal site. Now the TBM cutterhead has been dismantled and transported 2.5km on a 48-wheel Self Propelled Trailer to the tunnel’s north portal site for its second drive. The TBM’s 120t tail skin was also moved in the same operation that took 3 hours. Eight other large pieces from the TBM’s front shield and middle shield, have already been transported by specialist equipment...

The digging of make-shift tunnels by protesters at Small Dean in Buckinghamshire in 2021 added more than £4m to the cost of HS2. The government said: “Filled with lethal levels of carbon monoxide and dioxide, these tunnels can become death traps, not just for those inside them and members of the public, but also for those who are required to undertake rescue operations.” An amendment to the Public Order Bill will make it a criminal offence to cause serious disruption by creating and occup...

Work was halted last month when quality issues were found in the first batch of 5,020 segments manufactured by Stanton Precast in Ilkeston Derbyshire for main contractor EKFB – a team made up of Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial Construction and BAM Nuttall. Exhaustive tests have been carried-out on the already installed segments with HS2 set to decide imminently what, if any, remedial work is required.
