Approximately 70 per cent of the UK’s non-residential building stock was constructed before the year 2000. According to the Green Building Council, if the UK’s 2050 net zero targets are to be met, improved energy efficiency and reductions in embodied carbon will be needed, requiring much of the sector to undergo some form of retrofit ...

The British Property Federation (BPF) has launched its Net Zero Pledge – an industry-wide member initiative to cut carbon emissions across the whole of the property sector. With the built environment accounting for up to 40 per cent of global green-house gas emissions, the BPF says the property industry has a “vital role to play” in supporting the government to reach its net zero targets and that as an organisation it is “uniquely placed to bring members together to support each other to...

The target is more ambitious than the Royal BAM Group’s aim to reduce its direct emissions intensity by 80% by 2026 from 2015 levels. BAM is ruling out counting electricity from green energy tariffs towards its net zero emissions and said it would not be relying heavily on carbon offsets. John Wilkinson, chief operating officer of BAM UK & Ireland, said: “We have chosen to accelerate our progress – and we are not fooled that we will be alone. “The whole industry needs to challenge ...

As Australian state and territory governments mobilise to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, so too is the infrastructure industry. Achieving such a goal is by no means simple or linear; it requires a whole-of-business, systems-based approach across every asset lifecycle. In other words, the way forward demands new thinking, strategy and action from […]
