“As we are all well aware of the prolonged drought conditions, although we are not in fire restrictions yet, it is imperative that we remain diligent following basic fire safety principles,” said Fire Marshal Jennifer Donohue.
Although we are not yet in fire restrictions, propane and charcoal barbequing is acceptable if used within manufacturer’s guidelines and recommendations.
Allowable and prohibited items for Incline Village and Crystal Bay:
Allowed:
- Propane or gas barbecues (must meet the clearances per manufacture recommendations or standard 36-inch clearance from combustibles). A recreational permit is not required.
- Gas or propane fire pits (recreational burn permit with inspection required). Please contact Fire Inspector Jeffrey Smith at 775-831-0351, ext. 8107 or jsmith@nltfpd.net.
Prohibited:
- Fireworks (to include sparklers)
- Floating/flying lanterns
- Tiki torches
- The use of charcoal and wood-burning recreational fires
Follow these simple safety tips when using charcoal or propane grills:
Safety Tips:
- Propane and charcoal grills should only be used outdoors.
- The grill should be placed away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
- Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area.
- Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.
- Never leave your grill unattended.
- Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it.
Charcoal Grills:
- Charcoal grills are prohibited on combustible surfaces.
- There are several ways to get the charcoal ready to use. Charcoal chimney starters allow you to start the charcoal using newspaper as a fuel.
- If you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire.
- Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources.
- There are also electric charcoal starters, which do not use fire. Be sure to use an extension cord for outdoor use.
- When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container. Contact the Fire District for a free ash can (residents will need to have some type of wood burning heating appliance to be considered for the program). To obtain a free ash can, residents may fill out an application, available at the Fire District Administration Office, 866 Oriole Way, Incline Village. If the required criteria are met, an ash can will be provided.
Propane Grills:
- Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year.
- Apply a light soap and water solution to the hose. A propane leak will release bubbles.
- If your grill has a gas leak, by smell or the soapy bubble test, and there is no flame, turn off the gas tank and grill. If the leak stops, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again. If the leak does not stop, call the fire department.
- If you smell gas while cooking, immediately get away from the grill and call the fire department. Do not move the grill.
- If the flame goes out, turn the grill and gas off and wait at least 15 minutes before re-lighting it.

This splendid villa in a panoramic position is located in the heart of the Tuscan countryside just a few steps from the village of San Miniato. It is a magnificent result of an extensive renovation of the original medieval military fort dated 786 AD known as Castrum Moriori.

Later it was replaced by a large farm owned by the Grifoni family and then in 1751 it passed to the Pazzi family who transformed it into a farmhouse, evidence of which is still present today with the inscription of the family name in the stonework.
In 2013 the castle was carefully restored and transformed into a wonderful characterful accommodation facility. In line with the rustic Tuscan style, each apartment in this property has been renovated with quality materials such as handmade terracotta tiles from Impruneta and skilfully restored 19th-century wood-beamed ceilings.
The interior are composed as follows: the entrance from the garden leads onto a large hallway where the floor has been hand painted with the property's coat of arms. To the left one accesses the first apartment which consist of a living room and handcrafted kitchen in Carrara marble complete with a working fireplace. A corridor separates the living area from the sleeping area where there are two double bedroom and a bathroom with shower.
Also on the ground floor is the second apartment with independent access and an exclusive courtyard. It consists of a large living room with a fireplace, a kitchen, three double bedrooms and three spacious bathrooms.
Continuing on the first floor one finds the third apartment with a large living room also with a fireplace, a dining room with kitchen and two double bedrooms both with en-suite bathrooms. On this floor there is also the fourth apartment developed on two levels which is composed of a large dining room with kitchen and fireplace, a large bright living room, a bathroom and two double bedrooms each with a private bathroom. A stone staircase leads to the second attic floor where there is a large living space and two additional bathrooms.
Returning to the ground floor, from a staircase one reaches the basement where there is a professional kitchen, a large hall with a sandblasted stone ceiling, three rooms with vaulted ceilings and a reception room with a minibar and direct access to the outside. These spaces were once the villa’s cellar but are now used to host conferences and ceremonies.
To complete the property is a large parking area, a garden, 32 hectares of land with olive groves and woodland, a fantastic panoramic swimming pool overlooking the town, and a 600 sqm annex which is yet to be restored.Perched on a hill, the medieval village of San Miniato is immersed in the verdant Tuscan countryside and is still an important crossroad between the cities of Pisa and Florence.
The town’s origin dates back to the Longobards who in 713 AD together with King Frederick II Of Swabia erected a church dedicated to the martyr Miniato.Still present nowadays is the Rocca di Federico II which dominates the highest point of the San Miniato hill and is the main element that distinguishes and identifies the borgo. From its peak one can enjoy a spectacular 360 degrees view and during sunny days the gaze reaches the sea.
Napoleon also visited the village due to the local origins of the Buonaparte family and it was there that he received a certificate of nobility.San Miniato has numerous historical monuments all either renovated or reconstructed and which attest to its ancient roots. They include the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. Throughout the year there are a number of celebrations and events such as the National White Truffle Market Exhibition of Colline Sanminiatesi, the theater festival and numerous musical performances.With its important tradition of leather production at Ponte a Egola, San Miniato is also famous for its white truffles, wine and oil.

... moreWith summer rapidly approaching, pool owners across the region are preparing for opening day. In Ontario the covers are usually lifted on Victoria Day Weekend- or May Two-Four as it’s more commonly known.
As you watch your friends and family members prep their pools for the warm weather, you may be wondering, is it time I invest in a pool? But before you call the contractors or relocate to a home with a pool, there are some things you should consider.
Alongside relaxation is responsibility
Pools require regular maintenance. If left untended, pH levels could become imbalanced and problems like algae and bacteria could wreak havoc.
Here are some of the tasks you should expect when owning a pool:
- Brushing the walls
- Skimming the surface
- Emptying strainer baskets
- Vacuuming the debris on the bottom
- Checking water level and refilling if needed
If you don’t have time to manage these tasks, you can always hire a pool service company. But keep in mind that your pool will most likely need to be serviced multiple times each week, which means pool service technicians will be around quite a bit.
UTILITY BILLS WILL INCREASEIn order to stay clean and well-maintained, pools need to run for about eight hours each day. This means your utility bills will increase. According to HomeAdvisor, homeowners roughly pay up to $300 a year in electricity just to operate their pool pump. If your pool has a heater, or if you’re planning on purchasing one, this will also impact your monthly energy costs.
Inspect pre-owned poolsUnfortunately, pools don’t last forever. Depending on the pool’s material, it can last anywhere from 5 to 25 years before needing serious work like resurfacing or replacement.
If you’re moving into a home with an existing pool, you should ask the sellers for installation dates and if any repairs have been done over the years.
It’s also not a bad idea to get a professional’s opinion. You can book an appointment with a certified pool company to conduct a full inspection. They will ensure the water lines are leak free and the pumps pressure is up to par.
Increase in insurance premiumWhen you install a pool or move into a home with one, you open yourself up increased risk and liability.
This increased risk impacts your insurance. Both your liability insurance and the value of your home will need to be adjusted given the high incidence of injuries involved with swimming pools.
Having a slide or diving board may also increase your premium as they are often considered an additional risk.
Pools pose several safety risks, be prepared to take precautionsBetween 2011 and 2021 there were 918 drowning- related cases reported in Canada. Most of these cases occurred in swimming pools, with more than half involving children and infants aged 4 years or younger.
To minimize the risk swimming pools present, municipal laws in the Niagara Region require any swimming pool over 24 inches deep to be completely covered by a fence.
Diving boards also pose a major risk. There are several ways these boards could cause serious harm. You could hit the board while attempting a new trick or land on inattentive swimmers.
