5 reasons you should ship to Alaska with U-Pack
U-Pack makes sending household goods stress-free and affordable, with options to fit every size home.
The process is simple
U-Pack handles shipping your things, so you can travel to Alaska however you want — by boat, plane or car. We’ll deliver ReloCube® containers to your home, and then:
Our equipment works for homes of all sizes
Whether you’re living in a studio apartment or a large house, ReloCube containers are a great shipping solution. The metal containers are 6’ x 7’ x 8’ (external dimensions) and sit flat on the ground for easy loading and unloading. You can reserve as many as you’d like and only pay for the ones you use.
Note: Moving trailers are not currently available for shipping to Alaska.
It’s an affordable option
Moving containers are one of the best ways to ship your belongings to Alaska, and U-Pack is often the most affordable option to use. For example, see how the price for a U-Pack ReloCube compares to the cost of using a U-Haul® U-Box® for a studio apartment move from Boise, ID, to Anchorage, AK, in November 2022:
Note: Prices were accurate at the time of posting. Actual costs will vary based on the specifics of your move.
Wondering if you can save more by renting a truck? While truck rental may seem like the cheapest moving option, many people find that U-Pack is a better and cheaper alternative for relocating to Alaska. This is because the initial rental truck quote won’t include fuel, and some trucks only get 10 MPG or less when fully loaded. Factor in the terrain on the way to Alaska, and you could spend more on fuel than you anticipate. Here’s what a truck would cost for the same move above:
U-Haul 10’ rental truck: $4,650.85 The cost included $3,646 for the truck rental up to 3,190 miles, the required environmental fee, and the recommended liability coverage. The cost for fuel was estimated at $1,004.85 for 266 gallons (based on 12 MPG for 10’ trucks as listed on U-Haul’s website) using AAA’s Average Gas Price in the U.S. of $3.78 at the time of posting.
Transit times are faster than other companies
U-Pack ReloCubes arrive in Alaska sooner than most other moving companies — just 8-15 business days on average from origin to destination. Using the above example, U-Pack’s delivery was estimated 13-15 days, while U-Haul’s U-Box would take 40 days (almost seven weeks). Choosing U-Pack for the shipment would be five weeks faster (and less expensive) than U-Haul.
You can customize the service
Not sure yet where to live in Alaska? It’s not a problem with U-Pack! Just store the ReloCubes at our service center in Tacoma, WA, for a monthly fee (comparable to storage unit rental) until you’re ready for delivery in Alaska. And if you need help loading or unloading, we can refer you to local moving crews at a cost significantly less than full-service movers. Give us a call at 844-362-5303844-594-3077 to discuss adding storage or labor to your move.
Alaska shipping-related FAQs
Here are some other questions our customers have asked while preparing to send their belongings to Alaska.
Can I transport my car to Alaska with U-Pack?
While U-Pack equipment can hold lawnmowers, motorcycles and ATVs, we’re unable to ship cars. We refer customers to Mr. Car Shipper® for auto transport. Call them at 877-421-1284 for a quote.
Does U-Pack ship firearms and ammunition to Alaska?
Guns and ammunition are included on the U-Pack Do Not Ship List, so they cannot be packed with household goods. We recommend asking your local gun shop for referrals for a parcel shipper or if you’re flying to Alaska, checking with the TSA on their rules for transporting firearms.

1. Alaska is bigger (and smaller) than you think
Despite the fact that Alaska is the largest state in the U.S. (more than twice the size of Texas) it is also the least densely populated state according to the 2020 U.S. Census – partly due to the large number of lakes, rivers and active volcanoes throughout the state. So, if you’re looking for some more personal space, Alaska is a great choice since many locations are small, isolated villages.
Let’s look at some facts:
Population | 733,391 |
State size | 633,300 square miles |
Highest Point: Denali (formerly Mount McKinley) | 20,310 feet above sea level |
Glacier Coverage | 5% of the state of 29,000 square miles |
Bodies of water | 3,000+ rivers and over 3 million lakes |
Shoreline | 33,904 miles |
Volcanoes | 70+ active |
Data from the Official Alaska State Website and the 2020 United States Census.
2. The capital isn’t the largest city in the state
Looking for big city life in Alaska? You might think the capital, Juneau, is the largest city in the state, but it’s not. Anchorage is actually the most populated place with just over 291,000 people, which is more than 9 times as many residents as the capital! It might be a better option if you prefer living near more amenities. Looking for other potential places to settle down? Here are Alaska’s top 10 largest cities and their populations as reported in the 2020 U.S. Census:
Check out some of the best places to live in each region of Alaska
3. Alaskan food and culture are unique to the state
Looking to expand your typical diet? Alaska is a great place to try new things! Don’t be surprised to find large game animals like moose, caribou and elk on the menus. Cold-water seafood like halibut and salmon are also popular since they can be caught locally. King salmon is actually the state fish! Wild berries like lingonberries and salmonberries are common. For a new dessert, consider trying the traditional Alaskan dish akutaq (also known as Eskimo ice cream), which is whipped animal fat with berries and snow.
Alaska has an influential native culture and heritage showcased in festivals and food offerings. Native languages are still spoken in some areas. Because of Alaska’s location close to Russia, you’ll also notice some influence from that culture in the state. With the numerous hiking areas to explore and wildlife to see, people in Alaska generally appreciate the great outdoors. Many people who enjoy hunting and fishing flock to the area to enjoy the wide-open spaces.
4. Be prepared for a different climate in Alaska
With its location near the Arctic Circle, Alaska has different amounts of daylight and darkness compared to the lower 48 states. Living there means having to make adjustments for day and night hours.
Many residents take Vitamin D supplements and use special sun lamps to compensate for the lack of sunlight during the dark winters, which average only 3 - 6 hours of daylight per day. However, during the summer, some places experience more than 20 hours of light a day during the season, and when the sun does set, it still doesn’t get completely dark! To counteract this, residents may use blackout curtains in their bedrooms so they can sleep.
The seasons also look and feel a little different in Alaska. Winter, usually October - March, typically comes with extreme cold toward the interior of the state and slightly warmer temperatures near the ocean. Snowfall is always abundant, and Southeast Alaska receives the most rainfall. In the winter, it’s best to allow extra time to shovel snow and clear off the car. Because of the darkness and cold air, the need for extra light and heat can lead to higher-than-average electric bills.
Alaska generally experiences a melting period in April that leads into a short spring in May. Summer, mostly June - August, has plenty of sunshine and average temperatures in the 60s and 70s. Fall is just a few weeks in September before the snow starts again.
5. There are no income or statewide sales taxes in Alaska
When considering job offers and salaries in Alaska, keep in mind that the state doesn’t have individual income taxes or statewide sales taxes. However, some cities might have local taxes that are usually less than 5%. Property tax rates in the state vary based on area, dwelling type and age of the owner. For more tax information, visit the Alaska State Assessor’s website.
6. The cost of living isn’t the highest in the U.S.
Some people might be concerned about moving to Alaska because of the high cost of living, but it’s actually not the most expensive place to live in the U.S. While Alaska has a higher cost of living than the national average, Hawaii; Washington, D.C.; Massachusetts; California and New York all had higher costs of living for the second quarter of 2022.*
Housing
As of March 2022, the median adjusted rent (including basic utilities) in Alaska was $1,279.** A quarterly survey, conducted with the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation, found the average house in the state sold for $402,976** during the first quarter of the year.
Healthcare
Alaska is the fourth highest state for health insurance premium costs, following West Virginia, Wyoming and Vermont. The average lowest tier monthly premium for a healthy 40-year-old in Alaska was $672.** Dental care is often more expensive in the state as well. For example, the average cost for a basic dental cleaning in the U.S. was $104.87 in the U.S. versus the averages of $150 in Anchorage and $160 in Juneau.**
Groceries
Food costs vary across the state since it’s more expensive to transport goods to remote areas. Prices are typically lower in urban communities (like Fairbanks and Wasilla) and higher in places where food must be flown in (like Bethel and Nome). But the highest prices in Alaska are generally found in the capital city of Juneau. For example, the price for a dozen eggs averaged $2.19 in Juneau and $1.99 in Anchorage and Fairbanks, while the average U.S. price was $1.78.**
Fuel
In early 2022, the average cost for gasoline in Alaska was $5.31 a gallon and heating fuel was $4.83 a gallon.**
Unemployment rate
The Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development reported the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was just 4.5 percent in July 2022, compared to the U.S. rate of 3.5 percent. Job seekers in Alaska can find openings and apply for jobs online on the department’s website.

7. Alaska pays residents who live there
It’s true! The state shares oil dividends with its permanent residents through a yearly payment. The Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD) amount varies based on the oil profits from the previous year. Read more about the Alaska PFD.
8. You can choose your own adventure traveling to Alaska
To get to Alaska you can drive, fly or sail. The best option will depend on the season and your family’s needs. However you choose to get there, it can be your own adventure!
Note: Passports may be required depending on the method of travel you choose.
By car
Because of snowy weather conditions, car trips to Alaska are best done during the spring or summer. Driving there, you’ll pass through Canada and up the Alaska Highway (also known as the Alcan). Crossing the Rocky Mountains — about 150 miles of narrow roads with curves and no guardrails — can be overwhelming for some. That’s why many people turn to a moving company like U-Pack® as an alternative to driving a rental truck.
Canadian law requires all U.S. citizens to carry a valid U.S. passport, passport card or NEXUS card. Check out Canada’s website for COVID-19 travel guidelines for requirements and exemptions for entering the country.

By plane
While Alaska has several regional airports, most commercial flights land in Anchorage, Fairbanks or Juneau. Direct flights are available from several cities throughout the U.S., but many will require a stop in Seattle, WA.
Flying doesn’t require a passport when traveling from state to state. Even if you happen to land in Canada (emergency landing, weather, etc.), a passport isn’t required because Alaska is the destination. Just make sure not to leave the airport in Canada.
By boat
Board a ferry in Bellingham, WA, for a scenic way to get to the state! The Alaska Marine Highway System includes more than 3,500 miles of coastline. The ship will take you (and your vehicle) along the Canadian coast, to stops in Alaska cities like Juneau, Whittier, Homer and Sand Point. The trip from Bellingham, WA, to Juneau, AK, takes approximately 38 hours.
Sailing via the Alaska Marine Highway System (with no stops in Canada) won’t require a passport. But it will require a government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license.
9. U-Pack makes moving to Alaska easy and affordable
The options for moving to Alaska are similar to those for relocating between other states — full-service movers, rental trucks or self-moving services. Typically, the best way to move is with a self-moving service like U-Pack — you take care of packing, loading and unloading, and we handle the driving at a price comparable to a rental truck (without having to pay extra for the fuel).
U-Pack’s ReloCube® moving containers are ideal for shipping household goods to Alaska. The metal, weather-resistant Cubes measure 6’ x 7’ x 8’. Reserve as many as you think you’ll need (and pay only for the ones you use). Door-to-door service is available in central Alaska or choose to unload at the service center in Anchorage.
A minimum of 10 days’ notice is required to book a move to Alaska, but it’s best to allow at least 45 days for equipment availability. With U-Pack, there’s no deposit and you can book a move early even if you don’t know the final address. If plans change, cancel the move within 7 days of delivery with no charge.
Example U-Pack quote
For a studio apartment move from Minneapolis, MN, to Anchorage, AK, in October 2022, U-Pack recommends one ReloCube moving container for $4,514. This price was accurate at time of posting, but actual moving costs will vary.
Note: Moving trailers are not currently available for service in Alaska. Planning to move from Alaska to another state? Learn more about moving out of Alaska.

Securing a U-Pack moving trailer
There are two places to put a lock on a moving trailer: on the door while you’re still loading/unloading and on the bulkhead (privacy barrier) that you’ll install after you’re finished loading.
You’ll keep the keys to your bulkhead lock so you can access your things after delivery, but you’ll need to remove your lock from the trailer doors before we pick up the equipment. The driver will secure it with a company-owned lock for transport.
What type of lock works best for the moving trailer?
Locking a U-Pack ReloCube
ReloCube doors have a latch for installing your own padlock to keep the contents secure during transit and storage.
While you’re loading, we recommend locking the doors whenever the Cube is unattended. If space permits, you may also consider parking a vehicle in front of the Cube overnight for added peace of mind. Just like with bulkheads in the moving trailers, you’ll keep the keys for any locks you use on ReloCubes.

Top 10 tips for college move-in day
Here’s what to do to keep everything going smoothly:
Enlist some helpers
If the university doesn’t offer other students or staff to help with moving in, try to get some help on your own. Hire movers, ask your parents or other family members, or offer to help other students in exchange for their help.
Pro tip: Having a rolling cart or a folding dolly with bungee cords or straps is helpful for larger loads.
Dress for the day
Wear comfortable, older clothing and shoes appropriate for the weather conditions since there will be many trips to and from the car or moving equipment. The last thing you want is to snag or stain a favorite outfit or trip in new shoes.
Follow check-in procedures
Most colleges set moving times to keep down traffic jams. Arrive on time for check-in — showing up too early or late will just cause longer wait times for everyone. Make sure you understand where to collect keys or pay any deposits. If you’re not sure, ask someone! Colleges typically have staff on-hand to answer questions on move-in day.
Be considerate
A little kindness goes a long way. Hold open doors and don’t hog the elevator. Avoid blocking stairs, doorways and parking lot exits while unloading.
Stay hydrated
Even in cooler weather, it’s possible to overheat. Make sure you and any helpers drink plenty of water to keep from getting dehydrated. And don’t forget to eat! You’ll need energy to get through the day.
Choose the shortest route
The shortest route to your room might not be the front door. Once you’ve found the room, look for closer exits, elevators or stairwells to shorten trips. Many dorms open all doors while students are moving in to limit congestion in the hallways.
Use a fan and doorstop
Fans and doorstops are super important for move-in day. With outside doors constantly opening (or staying propped open), the inside of the building can get uncomfortable quickly. Set up a box fan in the room right away to keep the air flowing and use a doorstop under the room door to make it easier to drop off things.
Protect valuables
Make sure to keep an eye on things like appliances, laptops, phones and other valuable items while unloading to keep them safe.
Unpack last
It’s best to unpack after everything is in the room so you’re not taking too much time to complete the unloading process.
Celebrate
You’ve earned it! You’re moved in and ready for a new adventure. Honor the occasion by going out to eat or touring campus with family or friends. If you’re alone, reach out to other students or attend any welcome activities to get ready for the year.

How does the cost of a PODS® move compare to U-Pack?
To give you a better idea of the price of a PODS® move, we looked at a studio apartment move from Houston, TX, to Richmond, VA, in July 2022.
The total PODS® price was $3,112.84 (excluding taxes) for their 7-foot moving container. The price included delivery, transportation, standard liability coverage, 30 days of container rental and pickup of the empty container.
For the same move, U-Pack quoted $2,306 for one ReloCube container (similar in size to PODS® 7-foot container). The price included delivery, transportation, standard liability coverage, pickup of the empty container and taxes.
These prices were accurate at time of posting. Actual moving costs will vary based on origin, destination, moving equipment and dates.
What would additional storage cost?
If you’re looking for a portable storage option, you may need some extra storage time.
For our example move, PODS® would charge $210.00 for another 30 days of container rental (or storage at a local facility) and $49.95 to keep the liability coverage (excluding taxes).
Storage for the ReloCube at a local service center was $150 for each 30-day period.

What else should I know about PODS® pricing?
Like most moving companies, PODS® costs vary based on location, equipment and timing. But there are some other things you should know about the PODS® quoting and pricing process:
Quotes don’t include taxes
When you get a quote from PODS®, taxes are not included. Applicable sales taxes will be added to the price later, which can mean your final price could increase significantly.
PODS® requires a prepayment
PODS® moving costs are split into three separate payments (taxes not included). Each payment is due one week before the service is rendered.

Absolutely! U-Pack® is a DIY moving service where you pack and load, and then we handle the driving. Our quotes are all-inclusive, meaning that the equipment, transportation and liability coverage are included. U-Pack is already one of the most economical ways to move long distance, but you can save even more by using one or more of the following tips:
Be flexible with your moving date
If possible, consider moving during off-peak times to get a cheaper rate. The lowest prices are usually October to April when less people are relocating. If you’re moving during peak times of May to September, aim for the middle of the month and week when prices are often lower than rates for the beginning of months or weekends. Get a quote online or speak to one of our helpful moving consultants at 844-362-5303844-594-3077 to find the best time and rate for your long-distance move.
Compare prices for different equipment
U-Pack offers two types of equipment — space in a moving trailer or a ReloCube® moving container — and rates will differ by type. If both equipment types are available, you can toggle between them on the quote to see which option best meets your needs and budget.
Consider loading or unloading at a local service center
Although U-Pack quotes generally include door-to-door delivery, you can save money by choosing to load and/or unload at a local service center. While this option is a bit more work, it can help significantly lower the cost of a move. Check out our delivery options to find the right solution for your needs.
Move less stuff
Since your price is determined by the amount of space used in the trailer or the number of ReloCube containers filled, loading fewer things means paying less. Before packing, clean out your belongings by hosting a garage sale or donating unwanted items. Don’t forget to pack and load well to maximize space in the moving equipment.
Reserve your move online and book it early
Reserve a U-Pack move online to get an automatic $25 discount! Look for the price reduction on the reservation summary when you confirm the details. Learn more about other discounts we offer.
Also, with rising fuel prices, the earlier you book a move, the better. At U-Pack, the rate won’t increase on your reserved move if fuel prices get higher before then. As long as you don’t change the dates after booking, the price is set and there won’t be any additional fees for fuel.

Moving to another state can be stressful, but the drive to your new home doesn’t have to be! It’s possible to turn the move into an amazing road trip your family will remember forever. Follow these tips to make the most out of your long car ride.
1. Get pre-trip car maintenance
Before setting off on the long drive, give your personal vehicle a checkup to avoid any preventable problems. Take your car to a trusted mechanic for a tune-up or follow our car maintenance checklist to handle the tasks yourself.
2. Map your route
The last thing you want to do is waste time or fuel getting lost. Check out our cross-country road trip routes for ideas or use your favorite map website or app (Like Google Maps or RoadTrippers.com) to plan the best trip. Look for sightseeing opportunities your family will enjoy along the way and don’t forget to include any admission fees when planning a travel budget.
Here are some family-friendly attraction suggestions to get you started:
Pro tip: It’s helpful to have cash in small bills handy for any toll roads along your route.
3. Schedule overnight stops
Once you have your sightseeing stops planned, check out places to stay along the route. U-Pack® moving experts recommend limiting driving to no more than 500 miles per day, so look for stops within that range (or lower).
It’s helpful to make reservations ahead of time to avoid any last-minute struggles to find somewhere to sleep. Planning ahead is especially helpful if you’re traveling with pets to make sure the rental can accommodate your furry friend.
If you’re traveling with moving equipment like a rental truck, make sure there’s enough room to park and secure it for the night. Moving with U-Pack means that we handle driving your things to the new place. Then you and your family can travel without having to worry about the security of your entire household of belongings.
4. Review state laws
Always obey traffic rules like speed limits and stop signs. And before hitting the road, get familiar with laws about wearing seatbelts and distracted driving for the states you’ll pass through.
It’s also important to follow car seat and booster laws if you’re traveling with kids. Make sure each child has a properly installed seat. Your local police or fire station can help with installation questions.

5. Plan fun activities for the long car ride
Let’s face it, it’s easy to get bored during a long drive if you don’t have something to do besides stare out the window. Keeping kids and other passengers entertained is a must!
Try some of the following suggestions for the ride:
6. Pack some trip-worthy snacks
The only thing worse than a bored passenger is a hungry one. Keep some car-friendly snacks on-hand to keep everyone from getting hungry before the next meal stop. A cooler stocked with bottled water, juice, and sandwiches is great for the road. Kid-friendly snacks like dry cereal, trail mix, raisins, granola bars and cheese crackers are easy to eat on the go and won’t make too big of a mess in the car.
7. Check the weather
Keep a close eye on weather conditions to avoid danger ahead. With each fuel and rest stop, check a reliable weather site or app like The Weather Channel to view your upcoming travel areas. If bad weather is in the forecast, you might need to wait it out by extending one of your stops.
Make sure you’re familiar with how to drive on snow and ice if the timing of your trip might take you through winter conditions.
8. Be prepared for the unexpected
Even the most carefully planned road trip can have challenges. Before you head out, have a plan in place to deal with any issues that might arise.
Car trouble
Contact information for a road-side assistance program is essential for long drives. Many car insurance policies offer these services, so check with your provider. If you don’t have coverage, consider a company like AAA in case of a vehicle problem during your trip.
Lost debit or credit cards
Keep a copy of the last 4 digits of your card along with customer service phone numbers in a safe place in case you need to report a loss. It’s also a good idea to have some cash on hand in case of emergencies.

What You Need to Know About Parking Moving Equipment

It’s important to arrange for legal parking on both ends of your move to avoid unpleasant surprises like fines or tickets. No matter what type of equipment you’re using — like a U-Pack® moving trailer or ReloCube® containers — be sure to plan ahead.
Find parking space
When you’re looking for the best place to park, consider the size of your moving equipment and how much space is needed to open the doors and use the loading ramp. Choose a space with a solid surface that has enough ground clearance and don’t forget to make sure there are no tree limbs, power lines or other items that might create an obstacle overhead.
Learn more about how much space you need for parking U-Pack equipment:
Get permission to park
Once you’ve found the perfect parking area, the next step is to find out if you need a parking permit. Here are good places to start:
Learn more about parking at apartments or storage units.
With U-Pack, you get use of the equipment for three business days, so make sure to check about overnight parking while you’re at it.
Plan for equipment delivery
Once you know where you’ll park the equipment, it’s important to make sure the parking space is available when the equipment is delivered and that someone is there to instruct the driver where to drop it when they arrive. Also be sure the space is clear of any vehicles, toys or debris.
Note: When U-Pack equipment is dropped off, both at origin and destination, someone 18 or older must be present to sign for the delivery and instruct the driver on placement. If you need to have a friend or family member handle this, it’s not a problem! Just let us know who will be signing for you.
Frequently asked parking questions
What if I can’t park overnight?
In some cases, moving companies can pick up the equipment the same day or arrange for the driver to stay while you load.
If you’re booked with U-Pack and are unable to leave the ReloCubes or trailer parked overnight, let us know! We may be able to do a same day drop off and pick up or we have options for loading and unloading at a service center.
Learn more about U-Pack delivery options.
What if I don’t have enough space for delivery?
If there’s not enough space to deliver the equipment, you may need to consider other options, like parking the equipment in an alternative location and shuttling your belongings.
U-Pack has some additional options:
If you don’t have adequate driveway or parking lot parking, moving trailers and ReloCubes can be parked on the street with proper permits. For ReloCubes, we can often park the delivery equipment on a nearby side street and bring the Cubes to your driveway or parking area with a forklift. You’ll still need 14 feet of overhead clearance for the forklift and a level area to place the Cubes. You can also load or unload at a local service center, which will save money on your move.
What if I don’t have a solid surface for parking?
While concrete or asphalt are ideal surfaces, hard-packed gravel can work in some cases. For a U-Pack move, a moving consultant can go over your options!
