As we gladly came to the end of a wild and wet winter, I was excited to see some of the best of the weird shade-loving plants coming up. The crazy thing about these plants is that they grow perfectly in our wet world. Most of these could never survive in the dry climates of California and Arizona, in the bitter cold of the Midwest and New England, or in the heat of the South. The moist, acidic soil shaded by towering evergreens and leafy vine maples (Acer circinatum and cvs., Zones 6β9) of the...

Today weβre visiting John and Joanneβs garden in Abbotsford, British Columbia. In the 28 years we have owned our house we have chosen not to fence the back. It makes the yard look bigger and offers regular opportunities to chat with passersby on Stoney Creek Trail. The downside is that dogs that are supposed to be leashed occasionally come barging in. It is not uncommon as well to have deer prance through the yard a few times a year. Once in a while we hear of people having sighted a cougar ...

Iβm Lizzi, and I live in Walla Walla, Washington. We moved here 2Β½ years ago from Portland, Oregon, where I had been gardening for 20 years. While my planting zone didnβt change too much, from 8b to 7a, itβs enough colder and drier here that many of my favorites wouldnβt make it. I made lots of mistakes in my first garden, and while it was lush, it was chaotic. This time around I was going to plan better, focusing on a limited palette of drought-tolerant plants, foliage over flowers, bu...

Helen Rehn is welcoming us into her garden today. I live in La Grange, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. I used to long for a lot of sun in my garden, but I now appreciate my shade. Most of my garden lies beneath a very old English elm or a red maple. When the garden comes to life in the spring, it brings me joy. A pink hellebore (Helleborus hybrid, Zones 4β9) with brunnera (Brunnera macrophylla, Zones 3β8). Both of these plants have beautiful flowers, the hellebore with long-lasting blooms tha...

Today weβre visiting with Karen Holmen. A few years back I sent in some pictures of my garden (From Wild to Wonderful and Made for Shade ). Since it always looks different to meβplants die, grow, pop up, get moved or replacedβI decided to send in an update. I live in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, and have worked with my property since 1985. When I first moved here we had a lot of old oak trees, several old cottonwoods, buckthorn, various shrubs and weeds, weeds, and more weeds, Some of the t...
