Drought-Tolerant Shrubs for the California - FineGardening
Abstract
According to NASA Earth Observatory, one-third of the United States experienced some level of drought in 2020. Coffeeberry is an adaptable, drought-tolerant shrub that can easily become stars or backbones of your garden. Brittlebush's foliage is silvery green to reflect light in its native habitat, a quality that makes it great for contrasting with greener plants. The small pink and white flowers turn rust colored in fall. California buckwheats turn rust coloured in fall and are very attractive to bees and butterflies.

I like to incorporate a lot of color in my gardens. While flowers are a big part of what provides that color, foliage can also play a large role. Leaves in different shades of green, blue—and one of my favorites—purple, can be used to provide colorful interest in the garden. Fortunately, we have some great purple shrubs and trees from which to choose. These plants do well in challenging conditions, such as dry, hot, or sunny areas, and they are winter hardy as well. Here are some of my favor...

According to NASA Earth Observatory, one-third of the United States experienced some level of drought in 2020 and 2021 was much the same. This pattern of extended dry weather is sadly becoming more and more of the norm. We recently did a feature in Fine Gardening magazine highlighting a series of drought tolerant woody plants from around the country in our regional pages and that got Carol and Danielle thinking about which trees and shrubs are their favorite water-wise selections. Listen to toda...
