Beauties From Barry's Garden - FineGardening
Abstract
Barry Severn grows many wonderful plants in his garden outside Toronto. The little annual Phacelia campanularia is native to California but thrives in gardens in many climates. After its brilliant early summer bloom, Oriental poppy (Papaver orientale, Zones 3β7) goes completely dormant, disappearing belowground until the next spring. The delicate pink flowers of Dianthus capitatus (Zones 4-7) are produced.

Today weβre visiting Amy Birdsongβs garden in Virginia. Two years ago I became serious about restoring and improving our property, which up until then my husband had valiantly been taking care of with little to no input or help from me. As a kitchen and bath designer I am well versed in space planning, but I had zero knowledge on how to create a true garden. So like all good students, I went all in on research. I began visiting gardens, buying an embarrassing amount of garden books, obsessiv...

Iβm Katie. Iβm a proud Midwesterner, and all of these photos are from my Indiana backyard garden. By day, I am a licensed and certified speech-language pathologist. By weekend and summer, I turn full-fledged gardener and spend most of my time in my humble backyard paradise. About six years ago, I began transforming our empty, desolate, almost full-acre yard to rich, healthy ecosystems in the form of garden beds, shrubs, and trees. In addition to this, I βraiseβ monarchs and proudly wear ...

Todayβs photos are from Dede Lifgren. Welcome to my garden in Brewster, New York (Zone 6a). I am an artist and garden lover. Much of my artwork centers around my garden. Or is it the other way around? Either way, I love to take full advantage of both! My pineapple columns and some potted impatiens (Impatiens walleriana, Zones 10β11 or as an annual) greet visitors at the entryway. In the main garden, trickling water can be heard from the fountain as you enter the property. A cypress (Chamaecy...

Kat Kinch sent in todayβs photos of a garden transformation. My mom, Pat, a retired teacher, was increasingly concerned that a huge, old red maple in close proximity to her house would one day end up in her bedroom in a summer storm. With no small amount of regret, she decided to have it taken down. While she breathed easier when gusts arrived, the space the old tree formerly occupied was left an arid slope. She missed the leafy shade, and the dry ground and network of roots made new planting ...

Maureen Budney, in North Reading, Massachusetts, is a talented amateur photographer and often shares the sights she captures with us. I love how this photo of a hardy hibiscus (Hibiscus hybrid, Zones 5β10) makes you stop and take in all the details of this beautiful bloom. Hardy perennial hibiscus are hybrids of species native to eastern North America and make imposing plants with their huge summer blooms. This clematis (Clematis, large-flowered hybrid, Zones 5β9) bloom has deep velvety purp...

When the time came for me to transform a 90-year-old putting green into a perennial garden on my familyβs three-generation plot, I froze. As a designer, I usually seek out such challenges, but when faced with planning a garden on this spot in my yardβwhich was a large, blank canvasβI felt overwhelmed as I could suddenly do whatever I wanted. This garden is made up of four quadrants around two perpendicular gravel paths that lead to other areas of the yard. Step 1: Garden preplanning Consid...

Fall is a wonderful time in the garden. The cool, crisp air encourages plants toward dormancy; perennial foliage starts to yellow and wither as deciduous trees paint the landscape with a kaleiΒdoscope of colors. As we reluctantly accept the inevitable and begin preparing our gardens for winter, we can ease the transition by planting selections that provide color and excitement at this time of year. While many gardeners have traditionally turned to mums (Chrysanthemum spp. and cvs., Zones 5β9)...

Today weβre visiting with Sharon Danovich Lupone in Pittsburgh. Weβve been to her garden before (Sharonβs Pennsylvania Garden, Part 2 and Sharonβs Pennsylvania Garden), and today sheβs sharing some views of the garden is it moves into fall. As summer winds down, the blooms of the panicle hydrangeas (Hydrangea paniculata, Zones 3β8) take on rosey hues. Comfortable chairs invite you to sit and enjoy the garden. A pot of coleus (Coleus scutellarioides, Zones 9β11 or as an annual) give...

Spring can be one of the most colorful times of year in the garden, but it can also be one of the sparest. Here at Chanticleer, a public garden in Wayne, Pennsylvania, we have found that some clever choreography and creative handiwork can help the garden to seem full, even when some of our summer favorites are still sleeping in. Here is some garden design inspiration from Chanticleer that could translate easily to almost any home garden. Pairing garden companions that bloom at the same time heig...
