$7.45M Hog Island Is the Largest Private Island Available in Florida Right Now

It’s the ultimate in seclusion in the middle of North Central Florida: a private island in the middle of St. Johns River near Lake George.

In addition to the seclusion, we’re in love with the swine-based name. On the market for $7.45 million, Hog Island is far from a sty.

Marketed as “the largest private island for sale in the state of Florida,” the property comes with a helipad, three cabins, as well as a small home plus a parcel of land on the mainland. Usable acreage depends on the weather and the river.

“The island itself consists of 220 acres, and there are some wetlands throughout the island, so at different times of the year or if there is a storm, the water may come up. To the seller’s knowledge, the cabins have never been flooded,” says listing agent Carl Lilavois, who’s with Keller Williams Realty.

The island offers biking and walking trails, but the real attraction is the verdant surroundings.

“It is jaw-dropping just seeing how much land is out there—and how much wildlife is actually out there,” Lilavois says.

“The seller started purchasing the parcels in 2009 and bought the final ones in 2013,” he says. “His phrase was, ‘You either own a whole island or you don’t.’”

In total, the offering consists of five structures and 224 acres.

A historic structure on the mainland that Lilavois says is the oldest schoolhouse in Putnam County is included in the sale. It’s used as a “reception center” for guests ready to embark on their journey to Hog Island.

The cabins are all equipped with full kitchens and amenities such as Wi-Fi, phone, and electricity.

“They all have been redone as of 2012 and 2013,” Lilavois says. “One of the cabins on the far side of the island has its own boat access to it.”

The island has several docks, and it’s only a five-minute boat ride to the mainland.

The property was once known as Belle Island, but the current owner changed it to Hog Island. One mundane reason for the name change is that there were hogs on the island. Another reason was more humorous—and devious.

“He changed the name to Hog Island because Belle Island is an attractive name, and you may have a boater who might want to just stop in to tour the island, whereas Hog Island is not as much of an attractive name,” Lilavois explains. “It was something he changed to keep people away from his private property.”

Now that all the cabins have been updated, Lilavois says, the seller is ready to move on and leave everything behind.

“All furnishings go with the properties,” he says. “Everything’s being sold with it.”
