Messer initiative places urban workers in subcontractor jobs
Abstract
Stan Williams, vice president of economic inclusion, helped create the Urban Workforce Development Initiative. The company pledged to add 45 jobs for locals across various urban projects by 2024. The project is now in its second year and is working to get more than 100,000 people in a year. The new workers are from majority-Black neighborhoods — a demographic that is under-represented in construction. Roughly 6 per cent of construction workers are Black, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

One Monday in late November, preservationists, politicians, neighbors and looky-loos gathered at dusk on Manhattan’s tiny Gay Street, a slim crescent in the heart of Greenwich Village, to protest the demolition of a nearly 200-year-old house there. The place in question, 14 Gay Street, is one of a clutch of six winsome but precarious early 19th-century buildings on Gay and Christopher Streets that were owned for decades by Celeste Martin, a singular character devoted to her properties and to t...

Bridgeport was once unavoidable. In the middle of the last century, the waterfront Fairfield County city 60 miles from Manhattan churned out so many kinds of products, it seemed to be almost single-handedly shaping the habits of modern life. Rolling off the assembly lines there: lipstick cases, flashlights, typewriters, fans, underwear, sewing machines, cars, scissors, guns, lace, drills, helicopters and phonograph records. But some people are only familiar with the aftermath: crumbling factorie...

They work with costs, the supply chain, and many other aspects of a build to help it get done on time (or early) and on or under budget. This job places a lot of responsibility on the shoulders of one person, so those who do well in it are able to handle stress, make good decisions, and be great collaborators with their teams.
