Frank Lloyd Wright Hated Garages And This Is Why
Abstract
The Frank Thomas House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, has a carport behind the house, instead of a garage. The garage became the handy place to put tools, children’s outdoor toys, off-season furnishings and decorations, gardening supplies, snow shovels, leftover wallpaper and everything else big, bulky or outdoors-oriented. The Robie House in Oak Park, Illinois was one of the first American homes to incorporate a garage. But Wright did not like garages. The house was an early commission. He said he added an enclosed garage space with fuel pumps to his own home. In 1909, he added a three-car garage to the house. But he didn’t like garage, despite the fact that he didn't like it.
