Carla’s Potted Plantings - FineGardening
Abstract
A cool container without a drainage hole can be turned into a suitable home for plants by slipping another pot with drainage inside it. Growing lavender (Lavandula angustifolia, Zones 5–9) in a pot is a great way to lift that fragrant foliage up to where you can easily smell it. Do you receive the GPOD by email yet? We’ve visited Carla Zambelli Mudry’s garden in Malvern, Pennsylvania, several times, but today she’s sharing a focus on her container plants. It’s not all about what you put in your flower beds; it’s also about hanging baskets, planters, and pots. Often these are gardening alternatives that people with very little gardening space can do! I like mixing perennials with annuals, and I use herbs and more in pots. In some of the bigger anchor pots, I like using perennials because I don’t ...

Today’s photos are from Cherry Ong in Richmond, British Columbia. I wanted to share with you some amazing container garden designs by Hunter Norminton. I volunteer for a local nursery. Hunter joined the nursery part-time last year (he’s a student and has no formal horticultural training but was highly influenced by his mom), and he has designed so many amazing spring and summer containers, in all sizes. He currently loves blues, and you can see this in his present summer container designs. H...

We all know and love parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme. And then there’s sweet basil, which is perhaps the queen of all the herbs. But what about those herbs that are just as tasty—or attractive—but don’t get the same accolades? For those unsung heroes of the herb garden, we put together this episode. You’ll hear about a deliciously spicy lemon basil, an elegant edible flower with brilliant orange blooms, and a marigold that resembles a mint. There are herbs grown for ornamental or ed...

It might sound counterintuitive, but when the possibility of cooler weather arrives in fall, it’s time to think about spring flowers. Some of the best spring bloomers only do well if the seed is planted in the fall. The seed is surface sown after any mulch is applied and once the temperatures are cool. Sometimes the seed can be sown in October, but here in the South November is usually a better choice. The seeds germinate in mid to late winter and spend the remainder of the cold season as tiny...

Having grown up in New England, and living there now, I consider myself pretty spoiled in fall. After all, tourists literally flock to my section of North America every autumn to take in the sight of the native forests turning brilliant colors. We even have a term for these folks: leaf peepers. As I write this, I’m looking out my window at a sassafras (Sassafras albidum, Zones 4–9) that looks like someone lit it on fire. The orange, yellow, and red foliage glows so brightly that at certain t...

Bee balm (Monarda spp. and cvs., Zones 4–9) has long been a garden staple for its bold flower colors. The common name comes from the fact that the resin is a natural remedy to soothe the ache of bee stings. But this plant is better known in the gardening world for being a favorite of many pollinators, including bees. The popular species scarlet bee balm (Monarda didyma, Zones 4–9) is native to North America, as are some others. Here are six of my favorite nativar and native bee balms with co...

We’re traveling with Deborah Dorman today, who is taking us to Mendenhall Gardens in Juneau, Alaska. A flurry of golden bidens flowers (Bidens ferulifolia, Zones 9–11 or as an annual) accentuates the beauty of these rock formations. Blue lobelia (Lobelia erinus, annual) is a beautiful little plant that thrives best in cooler temperatures, so it is a perfect choice for an Alaskan garden. A spectacular display of hanging baskets is overflowing with petunias (Petunia hybrid, Zones 10–11 or as...

This is Kevin Kelly, and I thought I would share some photos from my trip to the Philadelphia Flower Show in mid-June. This show is the nation’s largest, and the world’s longest-running horticultural event, having begun in 1829. Over the years the show has been held indoors in early March, but the pandemic has forced it to be outdoors the last two years. This year, temperatures rose into the mid-90s, which caused its own set of challenges. The show plans to return to its indoor setting and M...
