We’re with Cherry Ong today, tagging along on a garden tour she did earlier this year during a trip to the Toronto area. According to the brochure Cherry received for the tour, this woodland planting is the garden of a professional gardener who likes to garden in harmony with nature, using nothing but fallen leaves to fertilize and enrich the soil. Here you can see a diversity of beautiful ferns as thriving in those conditions. If you choose the right plants for the right spots, they’ll thri...

Today Cherry Ong is taking us along to a garden she visited this spring. I had a serendipitous discovery when we visited Boundary Bay in Tsawassen, British Columbia, in a district called Southlands Tsawassen. There is a vibrant community garden there called Earthwise Gardens by Earthwise Society. Here’s more info on the farm and garden: earthwisesociety.bc.ca. We came on a rainy day, but that didn’t stop us from experiencing the vibrance and freshness of the garden. Spanish bluebells (Hyacin...

Cherry Ong is taking us along again to visit a beautiful space, the Doris Page Winter Garden in the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific in Victoria, British Columbia. As the name suggests, this garden is focused on winter interest and blooms, but it is full of beauty in other times of the year as well. Cherry visited in spring. A spot to sit sheltered from the elements and look out at the garden A crevice garden is a style of rock garden that creates the perfect conditions for a wide range of sp...

Frequent GPOD contributor Cherry Ong took a trip to Toronto recently and got the chance to tour some beautiful gardens. And, lucky for us, she took a lot of beautiful photos. I attended the Through the Garden Gate Wychwood garden tours offered by the Toronto Botanical Gardens. The garden description from the tour brochure says this: “This pretty front garden is an example of symmetry with boxwood squares complemented by topiary shrubs. The back garden is separated by a greenery-covered arch. P...

Friend of the GPOD Cherry Ong took a trip recently from her home on the west coast of Canada to Toronto and sent in some shots from gardens she was able to visit. Today she’s taking us along to see the Toronto Botanical Garden. This is the Terraced Garden, which is described on the website as “a buffer zone between the parking lot and the gardens. Its underlying structure is built of waste from the original construction site and includes recycled materials such as bottles and bricks for aest...

Cherry Ong is again taking us along to visit beautiful gardens, this time plantings in Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario. One of the top reasons I love walking along Queen Street in Niagara-on-the-Lake is to experience the amazing summer annual display along the street and fronting the stores and hotels. I walked the street twice to study the garden and container-garden designs (patterns and colors and all) hoping to take inspiration home with me for planting my own summer garden. This photo along ...

We’re traveling with Deborah Dorman today, who is taking us to Mendenhall Gardens in Juneau, Alaska. A flurry of golden bidens flowers (Bidens ferulifolia, Zones 9–11 or as an annual) accentuates the beauty of these rock formations. Blue lobelia (Lobelia erinus, annual) is a beautiful little plant that thrives best in cooler temperatures, so it is a perfect choice for an Alaskan garden. A spectacular display of hanging baskets is overflowing with petunias (Petunia hybrid, Zones 10–11 or as...

This is Kevin Kelly, and I thought I would share some photos from my trip to the Philadelphia Flower Show in mid-June. This show is the nation’s largest, and the world’s longest-running horticultural event, having begun in 1829. Over the years the show has been held indoors in early March, but the pandemic has forced it to be outdoors the last two years. This year, temperatures rose into the mid-90s, which caused its own set of challenges. The show plans to return to its indoor setting and M...

Today Cherry Ong is once again taking us along on a garden tour from her recent trip to Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This time, visiting The Gardens of Spadina Museum. According to Cherry, how you pronounce the name “Spadina” depends on where in Toronto you are from, either Spa-dye-na or Spa-Dee-nah. This historic mansion tells the story of 1930s Toronto on the inside, and has beautiful gardens on the outside. View of the mansion itself, looming large over the garden beds. A beautiful antique...
