Tropical-Looking Plants for Hot Southern Summers - FineGardening
Tropical-Looking Plants for Hot Southern Summers - FineGardening
Abstract
As the spring bloomers start to lose their shine, the tropical plants start to power up. Butterfly ginger is one of the best-smelling tropical-looking plants we have in the garden. Willow-leaved jessamine produces an abundance of blooms throughout summer (Cestrum parqui and cvs., Zones 7-11) Angels’ trumpets usually begin to bloom once the weather is good and hot, about midsummer. Red bracts hold white tubs hold flowers. The plants are a favorite with the hummingbirds and butterflies.

To us, tropical-looking plants are plants that thrive in the heat and that add a lot of bright color to the summer garden. They are perennial but disappear for the winter. A bit farther south they are evergreen and don’t freeze to the ground. A bit farther north and you have to replace them every year. It is great that they freeze to the ground every winter here in our region. It means that once the gooey mess is cleaned up, there is a clean slate for the plants to show off again in early spri...

In Andy Brand’s article Unusual Fall Perennials, he discusses some out-of-the-box plant picks for this spectacular time in the garden: “As we reluctantly accept the inevitable and begin preparing our gardens for winter, we can ease the transition by planting selections that provide color and excitement at this time of year. While many gardeners have traditionally turned to mums (Chrysanthemum spp. and cvs., Zones 5–9), goldenrods (Solidago spp. and cvs., Zones 3–9), and sedums (Hyl...

They’re creepy and they’re kooky. Mysterious and spooky. They’re all together ooky. Nope, it’s not the Adam’s Family, it’s the array of wicked plants on today’s episode. It’s Halloween season so we’ll be talking about an assortment of plants that are spiky, darkly pigmented, stinky, or perhaps even the most wicked of all: invasive. But don’t think every perennial or tree on this episode is unworthy of a spot in your garden, some are actually quite lovely landscape specimens. ...

Yes, I realize that 2021 was the hottest on record with temperatures reaching 108°F, and we can expect the weather to continue to change radically. However, along with drought-tolerant plant choices we should also consider water-loving perennial plants. As wet as the climate can be in the Pacific Northwest, we should all be embracing plants that love moisture. The year 2022 has been a bad one for tender or nonhardy things in my garden, largely due to the wet weather. The hybrid strawberry tree ...

Many of us in the Northeast struggle with the drier soil conditions found under tall evergreens, particularly the problematic summer-dry situations often found under towering Eastern white pines (Pinus strobus, Zones 3–8) and other forest trees. While few plants thrive in the sort of dark and dry shade found under a mature Norway spruce (Picea abies, Zones 2–7), there are more planting options once more light and spring moisture are introduced, such as under a pine (Pinus spp. and cvs., Zone...

If you garden in a low-wind situation, your tall plants probably won’t need staking. However, my big, bold garden is out in the open prairie, so staking is often a necessity. Here are some of the things I’ve learned from experience. See our favorite picks for big, bold plants. According to NASA Earth Observatory, one-third of the United States experienced some level of drought in 2020. Unfortunately, we know this was not a random anomaly but an increasing trend with more and more of the country experiencing extended dry spells. If you’ve found yourself outside holding the hose more often in recent years, it might be time to invest in more drought-tolerant plants. Below, you’ll find four expert-selected, resilient shrubs that can easily become stars or backbones o...
