HS2 milestone as first London tunnel drive starts
HS2 milestone as first London tunnel drive starts
Abstract
Sushila Hirani, after whom the TBM is named, ceremonially switch on the 2,000t, 140m long machine on its 5-mile journey. It is the first of six TBMs that will tunnel 26 miles under the capital. The fourth of 10 TBMs will eventually bore 64 miles of tunnels between London and the West Midlands. Later this year a second TBM, named after 18th century Astronaut Caroline Herschel, will also be launched. Fifteen strong shift teams will be launched to build the second of HS2’s twin-bore tunnels.

HS2 on Friday 10th June announced the start of construction at the site of its first ‘green tunnel’, designed to blend the high-speed railway into the landscape and reduce disruption for communities. Unlike a normal underground tunnel, the one-and-a-half mile (2.5km) Chipping Warden green tunnel in Northamptonshire is being built on the surface using a pioneering off-site manufacturing approach to speed up construction and improve efficiency. This approach will see more than five thousand gi...

A 2,000-tonne TBM named ‘Dorothy’ – after Dorothy Hodgkin, who in 1964 became the first British woman to win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry – has completed its one-mile dig under Long Itchington Wood in Warwickshire. The 125m long TBM started its journey at the tunnel’s North Portal in December 2021 and broke through the wall of the reception box at the South Portal site on Friday. Nearly 400 people working for HS2’s main works civils contractor Balfour Beatty VINCI (BBV JV) have del...

The firm is supplying giant precast concrete segments being used to build a new HS2 “green tunnel” in Northamptonshire. The Enquirer revealed last month that “quality issues” have been found on the initial batch of segments manufactured by Stanton Precast at its plant in Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Tests are still underway on the segments on the 2.5km Chipping Warden Green Tunnel where work started earlier this year. Main contractor on the job is EKFB – a team made up of Eiffage, Kier, Fer...

HS2 engineers have adopted a twin arch ‘M’ shape structure design, which is more efficient than the standard box structure, reducing the amount of concrete used. Segments are being manufactured offsite in a factory in Derbyshire for the 2.5km Chipping Warden green tunnel in Northamptonshire. This lighter-weight modular approach is expected to more than halve the amount of carbon embedded in the structure. It also requires fewer workers and equipment on site. Applying lessons from the const...

The Enquirer understands that urgent tests are being carried-out on segments erected on the 2.5km Chipping Warden Green Tunnel where work started earlier this year. Site sources said the part-erected tunnel may have to be demolished depending on the extent of the issues. The tunnel segments are being made by Stanton Precast in Ilkeston Derbyshire for main contractor EKFB – a team made up of Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial Construction and BAM Nuttall. The 15m-20m long escape tunnels are bored every 500m to connect the two main running tunnels around 40m below the surface. An expert team of miners are using a remotely controlled excavator to break out of and excavate from one running tunnel to the adjacent tunnel. As the excavation is progressed the ground is supported using a sprayed concrete lining (SCL). Delivered by HS2’s main works contractor, Align – a joint venture formed of Bouygues Travaux Publics, Sir Robert McAlpine, and Volk...
