Fort Wayne International Airport in Indiana recently selected Clayco to build its east terminal expansion project. Work is scheduled to start in May 2023.

Fort Wayne-Allen County Airport Authority officials have said the FWA airport project would cost $60 million, though the value of the contract with Chicago-based Clayco was not disclosed. Mead & Hunt is the designer. Plans call for expanding the terminal building’s footprint and adding a second floor. 

The project would include the renovation of about 10,500 sq ft of concourse plus construction of an additional 5,000 sq ft of space for airport operations. The scope of work also includes demolition part of the existing structure, relocating airline gates and passenger boarding bridges to the second level, expanding the TSA security checkpoint area and making other passenger-facing changes.

Mac Glinn, Clayco senior vice president and aviation business unit leader, said in a statement that the contractor would work with the airport authority to minimize impacts during construction. 

“We understand that we cannot drive away the traveling public in the process of making these types of improvements, that would undermine the whole purpose of these projects,” Glinn said.

Airport officials anticipate completion in June 2025. 

The airport authority has posted information on its website for any subcontractors interested in prequalifying for work on the project.

The Federal Aviation Administration awarded a $13.8-million grant to FWA earlier this year for the expansion project using funds from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. 

FWA’s east terminal expansion is part of its “project gateway,” which also includes a west terminal expansion that broke ground in June 2021. The west expansion includes building additional gates, expanding ticketing areas and other work. The first portion of it opened earlier this year.
