Listed for $2,975,000 at the beginning of the month, this architectural delight in Virginia Beach had its price trimmed by $125,000 last week. Located just a few blocks from the Atlantic Ocean, the home is the fifth most expensive listing in the 23451 ZIP code, but it is No. 1 for its esteemed pedigree.

Lakefront luxury

Built in 1959, the year Wright died, the four-bedroom residence known as the Andrew B. and Maude Cooke House took the legendary architect six years to design. Wright’s signature design elements in this 3,020-square-foot home include red cypress wood, a copper cantilevered roof, and glazed-brick walls. The great room is marked by a high ceiling—in this case, 70 feet—as well as built-in banquettes. The home sits on a half-acre lot facing Crystal Lake, a popular fishing and boating spot encircled by luxury homes.

Updates to the Cooke House

The current owner made some updates, including automatic shades in the living room and primary bedroom, an open kitchen with high-end appliances, and refreshed bathrooms. New plumbing, a generator, and a water heater were also added, along with radiant-heat floors. Further capitalizing on the possibility of aquatic fun, there are new docks, a pier, a deck, and a bulkhead. The property features extensive landscaping and comes with a four-car garage.

A really rare Wright

The Cookes commissioned Wright to build their dream home after attending one of his lectures. There have been only three owners of the Cooke home. The legendary architect designed two other residences in the commonwealth: the Pope-Leighey House in Alexandria and the Luis Marden House in McLean. Wright’s Solar Hemicycle designs (semicircular and oriented for maximum sun exposure) include the Curtis Meyer House in Michigan, the Lewis Spring House in Florida, and the Jacobs II house in Wisconsin. Previously, the Cooke home was listed in December 2014 for $2.75 million. It was finally sold in November 2016 for $2,197,270. Robin West has the listing.
