Stalled $2.7B Bridge Project Back on Track in Mobile, Ala
Abstract
The Mobile Bridge and Bayway project is back on the to-do list for the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) In July, the Mobile and Eastern Shore Metropolitan Planning Organizations voted to add the project back to the state’s Transportation Improvement Plan. Proposals are due to proceed in March 2023, with the planned notice to proceed with construction in February 2024. The state plans to use $1.1 billion from a Federal Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA) loan. The new route will collect tolls, but the existing tunnels and the US 90/98 causeway will remain toll-free. The plan ALDOT present proposes $2.50 per short, two-axle vehicles and $3 for each additional axle.
