Federal officials appointed an independent manager to stabilize the beleaguered Jackson, Miss., drinking water system, saying the city has failed to provide reliable water service. The move follows the city’s water crisis that left 160,000 people—the population of Jackson—with unreliably low water pressure, if any water at all, for days this summer. Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba estimates a $1-billion to $2-billion cost to fix all of the water system problems in the city....

One Monday in late November, preservationists, politicians, neighbors and looky-loos gathered at dusk on Manhattan’s tiny Gay Street, a slim crescent in the heart of Greenwich Village, to protest the demolition of a nearly 200-year-old house there. The place in question, 14 Gay Street, is one of a clutch of six winsome but precarious early 19th-century buildings on Gay and Christopher Streets that were owned for decades by Celeste Martin, a singular character devoted to her properties and to t...

Welcome to the bond market on Thanksgiving week in a year with the fastest rate spike in 4 decades, driven by inflation. This year, it just so happens that Thanksgiving week falls between the two most important CPI reports in a generation. Actually, the true importance will be determined by the December 13th CPI release. If it sends the same message as the last installment, it all but confirms we won't see rates higher than October's in a long, LONG time. With stakes that high, 3 weeks ...
