Abstract
A stately 45th Street mansion in Sacramento was so grand that Ronald and Nancy Reagan preferred it over the California governor's mansion. The couple resided in this home for the duration of Ronald's stint as governor, from 1967 to 1975. Here's how the governor of California at the time ended up in this palatial home. Storied estate When the Reagans first arrived in Sacramento, they found the official governor's mansion in a fairly dilapidated state. So after only four months in the mansion, California's first family at the time moved into this high-end, 6,963-square-foot spread in the upscale East Sacramento neighborhood known as the "Fabulous 40s." The Reagans rented the property until Ronald finished out his term in 1975. After the Reagans moved out, the Victorian served as a museum for almost 50 years until it was restored in 2015, at a cost of $4.1 million, when Jerry Brown served as governor. As for Gavin Newsom, he and his family lived briefly in the governor's mansion before moving to a more "Kid-friendly" house in the Sacramento suburb of Fair Oaks.
