California High-Speed Rail Authority Approves $4B San Francisco Line
Abstract
The state authority behind the rail system OK'd an environmental review of a section that will extend its line north to San Francisco. The California High-Speed Rail Authority Board of Directors certified the final environmental impact report/statement for a 43-mile section of high-speed rail between San Francisco and San Jose, the authority announced Aug. 18. The authority estimates it will cost about $4 billion to build the San Jose-San Francisco section, says Boris Lipkin, the authority's northern California regional director. The San Jose-San Francisco section will include about 43 miles through mostly urban areas. Contracts for the San Francisco-San Jose section could follow those examples, or use a different method, he adds. The San Francisco-San Jose section would run through urban areas. In April, the board certified the environmental review of the San Jose-Merced section.
